Piano removals: upright pianos moved with care

Duffield Removals moves upright pianos from Chester and Mid Wales, as part of a house move or on their own. Each piano is stretch-wrapped where it stands, taken out on a dolly where the floors allow, and travels standing upright, strapped to the wall of our own van, with goods in transit insurance to £120,000. We move baby grands occasionally, by arrangement. Larger grand pianos need a specialist piano mover, and we will tell you so when you ask rather than take the job on.

How an upright piano is moved

The piano is wrapped in stretch film where it stands, so the case, the lid and the keyboard are covered before it moves. It goes out on a dolly where the floors allow, is loaded standing upright and strapped to the wall of the van, and travels that way to the new house, where it goes into the room you choose. The wrap comes off once it is in place.

What we need to know for the quote

The make, and whether it is an upright or a baby grand
Where it stands now and where it is going: which floor, how many steps, any tight turns in the hallway
Parking at both ends, and how far the van can get to the door

A piano on its own, or with the house move

A piano can go with the rest of a house move as one line on the quote, or on its own. A piano on its own, to a new home or to a relative's house, is quoted the same way: the two addresses, the access at each end and the date. On the quote form choose "A few items" and mention the piano, or ring us.

After the move

A piano usually needs tuning after a move, once it has had a few weeks to settle to the temperature and humidity of its new room. We move pianos; we do not tune them, so book your usual tuner for a few weeks after moving day.

Insurance

While we move it, the piano is covered by our goods in transit insurance to £120,000 and the liability terms in our conditions. For a valuable piano, tell us its value when you ask for the quote and higher limits are agreed in writing before the day.

How much does it cost to move a piano?

It depends on the piano, the steps and stairs at each end and the distance, so it is priced in your quote as its own line. The make and a photo of the way out give us enough for an accurate price.

Yes. Choose "A few items" on the quote form or ring us, and tell us the make and the access at both ends.

Is the piano wrapped?

Yes. Every piano is stretch-wrapped before it moves and travels standing upright, strapped to the wall of the van.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?

Usually, yes. Give it a few weeks to settle in the new room, then book your tuner. We move pianos but do not tune them.
