How far in advance should you book a removal company?

Book two to three weeks ahead for a local move, four to six weeks for a long-distance move or any date in the last week of a month, and as early as you can once exchange is in sight. If the chain has given you a week or less, ring rather than fill in a form: short-notice moves happen every month, and the diary is the only thing that decides.

Why the end of the month is different

Most house completions fall on a Friday and most of those in the last week of a month, because that is how solicitors and mortgage offers line up. A removal company's diary for those days fills first. If your completion is likely to land there, get the quote and provisional booking done as soon as you have an exchange date in view, and confirm the day exchange happens.

Booking before you have a date

You can book provisionally on a likely week and firm it up when exchange fixes the date. We would rather hold a pencil booking and move it than have you ring on the Wednesday for the Friday. Tell us the likely week, the size of the move and both areas, and we will tell you how tight that week is.

When the date moves

Chains slip. If your completion moves, we move the booking with it where the diary allows, and if the new date is a busy one we say so straight away. Where the dates split (the sale completes, the purchase does not), the load goes into our storage and comes out when the keys arrive, which is why we run storage at both ends, in Chester and at Rhayader.

Our terms do set charges for postponing or cancelling, because a crew and vans are held for you. More than 14 working days before the move there is no charge; between 5 and 13 working days it is 30% of the removal charge; under 5 working days, 60%; within 24 hours, 75%; on the day, 100%. When a completion slips we try to move the booking rather than charge.

Short notice

Several of our Google reviews are from people whose online booking company let them down a day or two before the move. We fitted them in because a van and a crew were free; that is luck as much as planning. If you are in that position, ring us rather than filling in a form and you will get a straight yes or no.

Questions on this

Can I book a removal before I have exchanged contracts?

Yes, provisionally. We hold the likely date and confirm it when exchange fixes it.

What if my completion date changes after I have booked?

We move the booking with it wherever the diary allows and tell you immediately if the new date is difficult. Postponing more than 14 working days ahead is free under our terms.

Do you do next-day moves?

When a van and a crew are free, yes. Ring us rather than filling in the form.

When do I pay?

Payment is due in full, in cleared funds, on or before the morning of the move. We confirm the booking terms with your quote.
